Even the most diligent patients with the healthiest teeth and gums have something they dislike about their smiles. This dissatisfaction is often caused by an aesthetic imperfection, such as a crooked or jutted tooth. These flaws, no matter how slight, can make your smile appear rough and ragged. At Smile Montreal in Montreal, QC, our doctors provide a wide array of treatments in cosmetic dentistry, including treatment for a jutted tooth, so you can regain your confidence and take on the world.

Dental Bonding

The most conservative treatment for a jutted tooth is dental bonding. This procedure involves applying a composite resin material to the surface of the tooth. Composite resin is the same material used for tooth-colored fillings, so it blends in well with your smile. To address the cosmetic issue, your dentist will skillfully shape the material to make the jutted tooth appear flush to the neighboring teeth. Dental bonding usually lasts several years before it needs replacing. The material is prone to staining, though, so it is important to eat and drink dark foods in moderation.

Porcelain Veneers

One of the most common treatments in cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers, are ultra-thin restorations that are permanently bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth. Veneers are custom-made and color-matched for your smile. In order to apply the veneer to the tooth, a small amount of enamel will need to be removed. In some cases, no-prep veneers can be placed. Ask your doctor if you are a candidate.

When a porcelain veneer is applied, it changes the shape of the jutted tooth, making it appear even with the adjacent teeth. While porcelain veneers are more costly than dental bonding, they last much longer – up to 10 years or longer. Because they are crafted from porcelain, they are not prone to staining.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are similar to veneers. However, rather than covering the front portion of the tooth, a crown covers the entire structure. Therefore, in order to place the crown, the natural tooth will need to be reduced. This may be recommended if the tooth already has damage or decay, or if the tooth structure simply requires additional strength. Crowns may be recommended in more severe cases of jutted teeth. Your treatment will be determined by your unique situation and our doctors can help you decide which option is best for you.

Orthodontics

In some cases, a jutted tooth cannot be addressed with cosmetic dentistry. For example, if the tooth sticks out far, or is rotated, it cannot be effectively concealed with restorations or dental bonding. In situations such as this, orthodontics may be recommended. By straightening your teeth with orthodontics, you will be addressing the problem at its core. At Smile Montreal, we offer traditional braces, which can correct a myriad of common orthodontic problems, including jutted teeth, overlapping teeth, rotated teeth, overbites, underbites, and crossbites.
