Treatments for Missing Teeth By Patrick Casey on April 24, 2012

Montreal Treatment for Missing TeethThe effects of missing teeth can be quite severe. The physical effects of one or missing teeth can be quite devastating to the health and structure of remaining natural teeth. Bone loss, shifting teeth, gum disease, and tooth decay are just some of the many dental issues caused by missing teeth. Another distressing effect of missing teeth is the toll it can take on a person’s self-confidence. Our Montreal cosmetic dentistry patients often suffer from insecurities directly resulting from missing teeth. Fortunately, there are many effective treatments for missing teeth, including dental bridges and dental implants.

Traditional Dental Bridges

Traditional dental bridges do exactly what their name implies; they bridge the gap created by missing teeth. A dental bridge is a replacement option for patients with one to three consecutive missing teeth. Two dental crowns, each surrounding the gap created by the missing teeth, act as anchors for replacement teeth, thereby bridging the gap. Dental bridges restore the function and aesthetics of the smile, while protecting the structures of the remaining teeth from further damage that may result from missing teeth.

The dental bridge process requires two visits to the dentist’s office. The first visit is to prepare the teeth for the placement of the dental crowns and to make impressions of the teeth. The impressions of the teeth will act as molds from which the bridge, crowns, and artificial teeth will be made. Next, a temporary bridge will be placed to ensure that the teeth and gums are protected. Because each dental bridge is made to each individual’s unique specifications, the bridge must be custom-made in a laboratory. The second visit to the dentist’s office is to place the permanent dental bridge. After the temporary dental bridge has been removed, the permanent dental bridge is fitted into place. During this process, we will ensure that the fit and bite are correct. If any adjustments are required, we will make them at this time and then permanently cement the dental bridge in place. To ensure the strength and durability of dental bridges, they may be used in conjunction with dental implants.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are an excellent way for our patients with missing teeth to effectively restore the function and aesthetics of their smiles. Dental implants are extremely strong titanium posts that are implanted into the jawbone. The dental implants replace the natural roots of the missing teeth and act as an anchor for artificial teeth. Once the bone has grown around the dental implants, dental bridges, dentures, or dental crowns may be attached.

Dental implants provide unparalleled support for dental bridges, dentures, and dental crowns. Our Montreal cosmetic dentistry practice patients with missing teeth are often amazed at the strength dental implants provide. Dental implants are incredibly durable and long lasting. Dental implants are an ideal treatment option for our patients who wish to inconspicuously secure their replacement teeth.
