Inlays and Onlays Treatment By Patrick Casey on August 18, 2012

Montreal Inlays OnlaysIn Montreal, porcelain crowns and dental fillings aren’t the only solutions out there for repairing modest decay in one’s pearly whites. Teeth occupying the back of the smile that have a mild to moderate level of decay or cracks may be restored with inlays or onlays treatment. Made from ceramic, porcelain, composite resin, or gold, inlays and onlays are a wonderful restorative option. Ceramic, porcelain, and composite resin-fashioned restorations can be matched to the exact color of your other teeth for a natural, barely detectable look. Sometimes, the restorations are used to replace an old silver amalgam filling.

The dentists at Smile Montreal Dentistry, Dr. Charles Casey and Dr. Patrick Casey, are highly skilled in placing inlays and onlays. For a bright and healthy smile, they believe restorative treatment is essential.

The Difference and Similarities between Inlays Onlays

So what is the difference between inlays and onlays? How do our dentists know which treatment, if any, is right for you?

  • Inlays come in when decay or damage appears between the top indentions or cusps of the teeth. They can also be used to replace old silver amalgam fillings. Inlays must be securely bonded to the teeth, an element that features yet another benefit. The bonding means your tooth structure integrity will be reinforced!
  • Onlays, on the other hand, are a good option when decay extends to one or more of the cusps. Plus, this type of restoration treats decayed or damaged areas by removing much less of the natural tooth structure than other treatment options.
  • Both inlays and onlays can be made out of material that has the capacity to be matched to the color of your existing teeth, resulting in a most natural look!
  • Both inlays and onlays can be used to replace obvious-looking or damaged dental fillings

The Placement Process

Inlays and onlays are placed quite similarly. First, an impression of the affected tooth will be taken and you will be fitted with a temporary restoration to last you between visits. Meanwhile, the impression will be used to create your customized inlay or onlay at our lab. When the restoration is ready, you will return to our office, where your temporary inlay or onlay will be replaced with a permanent one.

Luckily, no down time is required after receiving inlays onlays placement, as it is a simple procedure. You can return to your regular routine immediately.

If your Smile Montreal Dentistry doctor believes you are an ideal candidate for inlays or onlays, he will determine which material to make the restoration out of. If you are interested in another course of treatment, a Montreal cosmetic dentist at our practice would be happy to consult with you.
