Preventative Dentistry Tips to Keep Your Smile Beautiful and Healthy By Patrick Casey on April 01, 2015

A woman at her dentist's officeThe team here at Smile Montreal believes that great dental health begins at the home. This is why in addition to offering advanced restorative dentistry to improve the health of the teeth and gums, we also offer patients ample advice on good at-home care.

Let's take a moment right now to look at some basic preventative dentistry tips.

Brush Your Teeth at Least Twice a Day

It's one of the easiest things you can do, and it's something that you know already, but it's important to repeat it: brushing your teeth at least twice a day helps keep plaque off of your teeth and helps fight cavities. It's ideal to brush your teeth after every meal, and that you use a toothbrush with a small head on it in order to access all of the hard-to-reach parts of the mouth.

Floss Your Teeth at Least Once a Night

Another common sense part of good preventative care at home is to floss your teeth at least once a night. This will help remove plaque and food particles between your teeth where the bristles of a toothbrush cannot reach. As with brushing, flossing after every meal is the most ideal thing you can do to ensure a healthy smile.

Do Not Use Tobacco Products

Cigars, cigarettes, and chewing tobacco don't just leave your breath smelling bad and stain your teeth. All of these tobacco products also increase your risk for developing gum disease and, more seriously, oral cancer. Be sure to quit using tobacco products or simply just don't start in the first place.

Wear Mouth and Face Protection When Needed

If you play contact sports or combat sports, it's important that you wear proper mouth protection and/or head protection during practice and competition. This will help ensure that your teeth are guarded from injury and that you do not bite your tongue.

For those who are interested, custom mouth guards can be crafted by their dentist in order to ensure the best possible protection from harm.

Don't Bite or Chew on Inedible Objects

Some bad habits aren't just social faux pas but also the cause of tooth damage. Such is the case with biting your fingernails or chewing on pens, drinking straws, and other objects that are hard yet inedible. Kick the habit and protect your smile in the process.

Stay Hydrated with Water

The benefits of drinking water cannot be overstated. Having several glasses of water a day will keep you hydrated and prevent cases of dry mouth. The water will also balance the pH of your mouth and remove food particles between your teeth in the process.

Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year for Routine Checkups

By seeing your dentist twice a year, you can get the dental treatment that you need that keeps your smile looking great and staying healthy. Be sure to attend all visits and to discuss your dental health concerns with your dentist.
