When Should You Start Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontics is an essential branch of the dental field. Orthodontic treatments, such as braces and aligners, correct malocclusion problems. Malocclusion problems affect the position of the teeth and jaw, compromising oral functions and increasing the risk of dental complications.

Drs. Charles and Patrick Casey of Smile Montreal offer a comprehensive range of orthodontic treatments. People who have crooked teeth or a misaligned bite often wonder when to start orthodontic treatment. Our dental team discusses treatment with our Montreal, QC, patients and recommend the best time to begin orthodontic care based on their unique needs.

Early Treatment Is Best

When it comes to orthodontics, early treatment is best. Early or interceptive care identifies malocclusion problems before they become advanced, and it allows them to be addressed when most treatable. Many people are surprised to learn that the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that kids get their first orthodontic evaluation around age seven - before all their permanent teeth come in.

Phases of Orthodontic Care

Early orthodontic care is best, but it is uncommon to see a 7-year-old child with braces. Braces and retainers are much more common for pre-teens and teens. That is because orthodontic treatment usually takes place in phases.

When a child undergoes their first orthodontic evaluation before their full set of permanent teeth is in, we can provide interceptive care. Interceptive care is the first phase of orthodontic treatment. Interceptive care uses treatments such as expanders and other devices to address common orthodontic issues. Interceptive care is recommended for children with a significant risk of orthodontic problems as they grow.

Phase two of orthodontic care involves full orthodontic treatment. When a child is evaluated for malocclusion problems at an early age, orthodontic treatment typically begins between the ages of 10 and 14. Orthodontic treatment involves the use of traditional braces or clear plastic aligner trays to gradually shift the teeth and jaw so they sit in their intended positions.

Can I Start Orthodontic Treatment As An Adult?

Early orthodontic care is recommended, but it is not uncommon for children to be denied orthodontic treatment or for malocclusion problems to redevelop after previous orthodontic care. Fortunately, orthodontics is suitable at nearly any age. At our Montreal dental practice, we routinely provide orthodontic care to adult patients.

Braces and Invisalign® effectively shift the teeth and jaw to address malocclusion problems such as an overbite, underbite, crossbite, and gapped or crowded teeth. The treatment best suited for each patient depends on the type and degree of issues being corrected. Our dentists are happy to recommend a treatment plan that is appropriate for each of our patient’s specific needs and desires.
