Candidacy for Sedation Dentistry

At Smile Montreal, we offer oral conscious sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation to ensure that our patients are relaxed and comfortable during their procedures. Many patients avoid the dentist for years because of anxiety or physical discomfort. Foregoing dental visits, however, can adversely affect your oral health and your overall health as well. During your treatment consultation, Dr. Patrick Casey will discuss your candidacy for sedation dentistry. In our Montreal, QC, dental practice, we strive to make each patient comfortable so that they can have the procedures performed to ensure their oral health.

Who Qualifies for Sedation Dentistry?

Most patients who are seeking sedative options experience some level of dental anxiety. While many patients admit to having a fear of the dentist, they can typically make it through an appointment without incident. Patients who experience severe dental anxiety, however, may have such an intense fear that they cannot even pick up the phone to schedule an appointment. Dental anxiety can range from a tensing of the body at the sound of a dental drill to a more extreme phobia. For some patients, the fear can be so intense that just sitting in the waiting area makes them physically ill.

We offer sedation dentistry options to patients who experience dental fear and anxiety, but others may benefit from the treatment as well. Patients who have difficulty finding a comfortable position or those who cannot remain in the same position for extended periods of time may benefit from sedation techniques. We commonly provide sedative options for patients with neck or back pain that may have prevented them from having dental work performed. Sedation is also a great option for patients with sensitive teeth, a low tolerance for pain, or a sensitive gag reflex. When you come in for your consultation, Dr. Casey will talk with you about your fears or any other condition that might require sedation.

Who Should Avoid Sedation Dentistry?

Dr. Casey will review your medical history during your consultation. While most patients will qualify for sedation treatment, patients with snoring problems, sleep apnea, or asthma may not be suitable candidates. The sedation methods we use can affect the way a patient breathes, so they may not be recommended for patients with these conditions. Patients who have a history of heart disease, palpitations, or other coronary problems may also want to seek an alternative treatment.

When We Use Sedation

We offer sedation dentistry to our patients for any procedure, from a simple cleaning to complex procedures, like the placing of dental implants, depending on their level of anxiety or discomfort. In many cases, Dr. Casey can complete several procedures in one day for a patient who is under sedation. Sedatives hinder the brain’s ability to recognize pain and discomfort while easing feelings of stress and fear. Most patients find that when they recover from the effects of the sedative, they have little or no recollection of the procedure.
