Learn how Dr. Patrick Casey can reduce your pain and improve your quality of life by treating your TMD symptoms...

What Is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)?

A temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is often caused by excessive strain placed on the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). These joints are the hard-working "hinge" that connects your jaw to your skull. Your entire chewing system, including jaw muscles and nerves, can be painfully affected by a TMJ disorder. If you grind or clench your teeth, it could be a result of your jaw being misaligned, which is often a cause of temporomandibular disorders.

Who Can Develop TMJ Disorders?

According to the TMJ Association, 35 million people in the United States suffer from TMJ disorders, with the majority being adult women.

Treatments

During your appointment with Dr. Casey, he can diagnose the root causes of your condition and determine the most effective and efficient treatment method. These methods may include:

Phase One

The first phase starts with diagnosing the existing pathological bite and seeing how it relates to your present symptoms. We do this by first taking measures to relax your muscles. This will allow us to determine if we believe there is a relationship between how your jaw is presently functioning and your symptoms. If we believe it to be the case, we then proceed with an orthotic (a custom mouthpiece that will place your jaw into a slightly different position), allowing us to determine if you are responding to treatment.

Phase Two

Once Phase One is completed, we work to replace the orthotic with a permanent change that can relieve your symptoms long-term. This may be achieved through orthodontics, full mouth rehabilitation, or simply adjusting your bite by removing very small amounts of dental tissue. If you suffer from multiple oral health conditions, Dr. Casey may recommend a full mouth reconstruction plan to more effectively treat all of the issues at the same time.
